Median

Median:

The median is obtained by:

  1. Ordering (least to greatest) the list of numbers.
  2. Selecting the number in the middle ....
For a list of numbers with an odd number of elements,  choose the middle number.
For a list of numbers with an even number of elements, choose the two middle numbers, add them and divide by two.

As you've driven along our freeways, you may have noticed a sign on the center divider.   The sign reads "Keep off the Median."  The word median implies center.  Therefore, the sign is asking you not to park, or stop on the center divider.  In math, median refers to the center of a list of number.   lf you are looking for the median of a list of numbers, you are looking for the "center" of the list of number.

To find the median of a list of numbers, sort the list of number in order, count how many numbers are in the list and then do one of the following:

Case: Even count of numbers in the list ...
  1. Find the average of the two middle numbers.
  2. Use the average as the answer.
Case: Odd count of numbers in the list ...
  1. Use middle number as the answer.

The following are examples of finding the median ...

Given a list of numbers: Sort in order: Count the number of things in list:
Median:
