Fractions In Conversation

 
 

In daily conversation, people use fractions.   People talking about "partially completed quilts", "partly tiled floors," and "incomplete decks."   The following problems ask you to look at some pictures and identify some fractions that you could use in a conversation.  Look at the first few pictures and answers and see if you can figure out a way to come up with the answers.

Elizabeth is making a quilt.    She has already cut enough pieces to make a quilt that is 5 by 4.   However, she has sown only a fraction of the pieces together.     If the picture below shows the quilt:

What fraction of the quilt remains to be sown?                                                                     

Ellen is making a quilt.    She has already cut enough pieces to make a quilt that is 6 by 4.   However, she has sown only a fraction of the pieces together.     If the picture below shows the quilt:

Ed is tiling the kitchen floor.    He plans to tile an area that will be 5 by 4.   He has tiled only a fraction of the floor     If the picture below shows the floor:

Fred is laying a deck in the back yard.   When done, the deck will have 21 planks.   If the picture below shows what is done so far:
