Reading/Writing Decimals

 

Reading decimals requires you to look at the number relative to the decimal point.   To read the number,

  1. Start at the right most digit.
  2. Determine which place value is associated with the rightmost digit .... tenths, hundredths, thousandth, ten-thousandths, hundred-thousandths, millionths, ...
  3. Read the number on the left of the decimal point.
  4. Say the word "AND".
  5. Read the number to the right of the decimal point, append the name of the last position on the right.   

Example:

1.     34.567
Think: 34 and 567 thousandths
Write: Thirty Four And Five Hundred Sixty Seven Thousandths.
2.     745.512
Think: 745 and 51
Write: Seven Hundred Forty-Five and Fifty-One Hundredths.
3.     23.4
Think: 23 and 4 tenths
Write: Twenty Three and Four Tenths.
4.     12.6233
Think: 12 and 6233 Ten-Thousandths
Write: Twelve and Six Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Three Thousandths.
